[A window pops up on everyone's bracers, forcefully installing the System Update that Sans and Sayori developed.

After it's finished loading, the messaging system pops back up, and a new message arrives. It opens without prompting, and a holographic figure projects onto the ground in front of everyone using a bracer.

The hologram is of what appears to be just a regular guy, some ambiguous schmuck. He's not particularly tall looking, wears a pair of big, black-framed glasses, his hair is mousey brown and trimmed short, and he doesn't even wear Faerun clothes.

He stands straight and confident with a smile on his face and his hands behind his back as he addresses the Reclaimers as if looking each of them in the eye.]

Hey! Hi! Hello there. Uh, wow, I gotta say, I wasn't expecting you to get through to me this way, but here we are!

That was pretty amazing.

Well, it's nice to finally meet you face to face! Or... face-to-hologram-projection-of-a-physical-manifestation. Hey! I'm your universe. That's right, the one you're living in right now! The one with uh, Faerun, and all the little folks running around there in places like Thay and Vista Virs.

You might know me as the Story. Some friends of mine like to call me Greg. It's kind of a little joke.

Uh, anyway, I know you're wondering why this conversation is so one-sided, and I'll try to field some questions at the end, but we kinda gotta make this quick, so, storytime! We've got— [he checks his wrist, which definitely does not have a watch.] — Just enough time for that.

Once upon a time, a small group of individuals got pulled throughout time and space, trying to fend off a pretty spooky-lookin' calamity. I'm talkin' end-of-all-worlds big. But saving worlds isn't easy, and more and more folks got pulled into a story and a struggle that was never theirs in the first place.

Those individuals found common ground and worked together to try and stop the calamity, and to reverse the damage it had done.

But despite their best efforts, it looked like they were destined to lose. Though they fought as hard as they could, a cult that sought to stop them from the beginning thwarted their plans and all of a sudden, magic, the hope they'd relied on all along, was snuffed out.

Cut off from magic and cut off from the planes, the heroes turned to each other and gave each other everything they had. They exchanged gifts of weapons, trinkets, armor; all in the effort of strengthening each other against the coming hardships.

As the nights grew colder, the calamity came upon them from the inside. The cult had found a way to plant a seed of doubt in their leader, and that doubt in herself consumed her, threatening to combine with the calamity that already chased the heroes.

None of them were counting on the fact that those heroes had made quite a few friends, notably detective Angus McDonald, a little boy of a particular kind. Those heroes were so kind to him, he'd do anything for them— even make a wish that could have been the end of him.

And so he did. He made a wish on a book that had captured a Relic's light, and that wish met up with all the other wishes those heroes made. Because you see, there's magic in hope. There's magic in love. And there's magic in a wish; Angus the dragon's wish; Lucretia, the cursed crewmate's wish; and yours, the wishes of stolen heroes. When the Relic amplified those wishes, I woke up.

[The hologram man grins even wider.]

I heard it.

I heard the hope in his voice and in yours and it reminded me of something really, really important.

It reminded me... that I really don't want to get eaten!

[The hologram man laughs, eyes crinkling behind his comical specs.]

I don't wanna end!

But see, the thing is, I'm just the story. I can't do anything myself. I had to figure out a way to get you guys all your power back. I realized that when Lucretia brought you here, pieces of your universes came with you. Those pieces became a part of me, including all of the magic that existed in you. With that magic, I was able to stitch the Weave back together.

In other words, we were able to fix the very fabric of magic's existence because of the magic that existed in you.

So I gave us more time by changing what time meant and brought you all here. If I stretched out time, it meant I could not only fix magic, but also take away Angus's entire memory of the thrall of the relic. I just... kind of took your memories of Candlenights, too.

Hey, uh, sorry, Angus, by the way.

The only problem with the whole idea was that in scanning some of the parts of your home, I downloaded parts that were eaten by the Hunger. They became like... vacant information, somehow, and the Islanders here called them "The Cursed." Since all those Hunger-copies really knew was searching for those Relics, they all gathered around the north side of the island, around the Relic that Angus used.

Now, I know that this still probably all seems like a lot of things that weren't your fault, but they sure are our problem. And like I said, I don't wanna get eaten. I'm sure none of you do either.

But I can't stop the Hunger without you.

You are the only ones that can turn this whole thing around. You are the little stars in my skies, the seams in the fabric that sews all your worlds together. You... are everything that makes me me, and I'm everything you bring.

Without you, I'm just... one big swath of space, a page that has yet to be written on.

So... are you ready to take the first step to stopping the Hunger?

As a result of Sans and Sayori's investigation of KV, multiple videos are sent to each of the Reclaimers' bracers.

LUCRETIA.VID

The screen plays a recording of a memory.

Lucretia is standing, surrounded by group of folks in red robes. She herself is clad in a red robe, though the viewer can only infer this from Lucretia's own point of view. Most of the faces are unrecognizable to the Reclaimers, save a few select faces;

the face of the Elf woman in the umbrella that Sans, Wash, and McCree saw before, Barry Bluejeans, Davenport himself, and Maureen, Lucas Miller's mother. The other figures are an elf man that looks remarkably similar to the woman, a dwarf with an impressive beard, and an absolute hulk of a human man.

The elf woman reaches out to touch Lucretia's shoulder, and Lucretia looks at her. The woman's face is so kind as she addresses Lucretia's worry.

"This will work, you have to believe in me," she assures. "And if it doesn't— if dividing the Light of Creation into these relics doesn't work, then we will try your method.

But please, Lucretia. Just give this a chance. Believe in us."

The recording swaps.

Lucretia stands in front of a mirror— no, the mirror—, reaching forward.

"Please," she pleads, stifling a sob, voice riddled with anguish. "I need help. I need more time. I—

I can't do this without them.

Not again."

The recording ends.

LUP.VID

The elf woman sits across from the identical elf man she was with in the prior video. She's looking at her lap, though, only seeing the man's knees close to hers, like their limbs are a bridge between them that almost doesn't meet.

"You didn't mean for any of this to happen." He says to her.

"I know that. And I know it's good. Like, the Hunger's not here, and the hunger's worse than anything we've done. I just... I can't help but ask."

She looks the elf man across from her in the eye.

"Did we make the right decision?"

The elf man's brows knit together and he takes a breath.

"...Who knows if the shield would have worked. You know... sometimes, there aren't right decisions. Sometimes there's just decisions."

The recording ends.

CURSED.VID

From the perspective of someone nearby, you watch as the dwarf from the prior video is confronted by a hooded figure.

"Now, I don't know what you're talking about," comes his rough voice. "If you're hungry, well, the tavern just across the street has the most amazing-"

His voice is cut off as a hand reaches out from the robes and grasps the dwarf around the neck. The hand is made of black opal, and as black tendrils reach out to stab into the dwarf, the dwarf's own eyes turn black as well.

The recording swaps to the vision of a more recent Lucretia.
It's the Lucretia the Reclaimers recall, in her current age and current outfit, or at least what she wore regularly before candlenights.

The view remains concentrated on Lucretia, but passing as if unnoticed by the recording, a shock of black shoots up through Lucretia's staff very suddenly.

"Are you alright, Johann?" Lucretia asks, raising a brow, looking genuinely concerned.

The view shakes as if the person whose memory this is has shaken their head, slowly.

"It's nothing, m'am..."

The recording ends.

CANDLENIGHTS.VID

This memory seems to come from a shorter stature as well. IT's the Moon Base as it stood in Faerun, and a child's hand— Angus's hand— reaches out to push the door open. Anyone who has visited the Voidfish's chambers after hours may recognise the room he enters.

"Madame Director? Are you in here?" he calls out.

The memory patches in as if it's skipped a bit, and now the scene becomes more clear.

Lucretia stands in the middle of the room, hunched over herself, clutching her head with one hand and the staff with the other. Davenport stands at her side, and there are other Reclaimers— Reclaimers that may be recognized as a handful those who haven't appeared yet on the island— around, as well as some Seekers and guards.

"You have to leave," Lucretia demands, her voice cracking as if with pain.

"M'am, you have to listen to-"

"Now! There is no more time for listening!"

Lucretia shouts, her voice like venom. When she looks up, her eyes have turned completely black.

"I can't... I can't hold it back anymore,"

"Not without us!" Angus asserts. "You can-- let us help you!"

"You don't understand! There is no more hope! There is nothing! Even if you leave— this is the end!"

All of a sudden, thorns shoot out of Lucretia's staff, which has turned completely into black opal. The thorned vines that shoot from Lucretia's heart and staff are all that black opal material, too, and they shoot out in every direction, grasping and curling around everyone in the room, Reclaimers and Seekers alike. Even Angus is caught in the vines.

He catches Lucretia's face again, watching as it wrenches in despair, black eyes still crying real, human tears.

"I'm sorry," Lucretia chokes. "This is all I can do."

Even more tendrils extend, wrapping around Lucretia herself, consuming her, devouring her. Angus reaches out, but those vines are starting to consume everything around them as well. Outside of the dome, the sound of a storm begins to ring, amplifying the terror of the moment.

Angus reaches out, trying to free himself from the tendrils, reaching for the hand of a dragonborn woman before a thorny vine tears her away from him.

He loses his balance, tumbling down a few more branches, and when he's finally stopped tumbling he looks around to see a book has fallen out of his bag.

CALEB CLEVELAND AND THE IMAGINARY ISLAND, bears the book's title, but its cover is gilded and shining.

A voice completely unlike the voice heard on the island calls out directly from the book's pages; the voice of a Relic.

"Use me. Save yourself. Save everyone."

Angus reaches out and grabs the book.

The recording ends.

[Time for a text message to the network, as Papyrus takes up Sans' suggestion... several weeks after the fact.]

IT. HAS. BEEN. TEN. WEEKS.
AND I AM AT MY LIMIT.

PEOPLE WHO'VE REGAINED LOTS OF MEMORIES,
WHAT IS YOUR SECRET???
HOW DID YOU DO IT!?

I BARELY REMEMBER ANYTHING AND I'M TIRED OF IT!!

THE DOG KEEPS HINTING,
THAT I COULD REMEMBER THINGS FASTER.
BUT WHEN I ASK HOW IT JUST WINKS AND WALKS AWAY.

IF I HAVE TO PUBLISH POETRY, I'LL DO IT.

[ooc: As always, I'm happy to drop the capslock or the font for readability if it helps, just let me know! (They continue IC because Papyrus.)]

So. Hi. [Great introduction, Church.] I was hoping someone around here could tell me more about nnnnnecrotic? Stuff? Necrotic magic.

Mostly I'm wondering if it...specifically saps the life out of things that are...just organic? Or everything that is technically living? Or just literally everything.

I'm asking for...

...

...reasons.

Cursed-related reasons! Nothing bad. Other than the Cursed being creepy.

Hey. I don't know most of you, but I'm Clear.

[Introduction? Nailed. Socializing? Flawless. Small talk? Concluded.]

I'm working at Miaoteo's now and figured since we're all in the same boat situation I'd offer to make things for anyone who needs them. I can't make anything as big as a sword or whatever but I guess anything a couple feet or shorter I could probably manage. I won't charge except for the cost of materials, I don't really need money here. And if you find materials and bring them I won't charge anything.

If it's something I can't make, I'll ask Miaoteo if he can put a rush on it. I'm not gonna ask him not to charge though. He's literally a tiger so he needs the money to eat a lot.

(Terms and conditions apply.)

That's it.

I don't remember much about my life before getting to the Bureau, I'll admit, but I do remember that on these missions we'd often share our findings together on one of these posts.

So here's another little hub for sharing that information and perhaps missed connections, too.

I haven't found much myself out by the ruins, but I did notice... has anyone been hearing strange voices?

[ooc: as suggested, you can use this post to share your findings in one cool spot. Mia won't respond to everything, but that means you can pretty much threadjack as you wish.]

so the other side of that big wall is pretty messed up

[And Sans posts a link to a video taken from the top of the Gilded Wall. The landscape is a ruin of grey, dry soil and scattered, desiccated trees. There are no animals to be found, not even insects. Something in the distance glitches--round static, with a dark circle inside. As soon as Sans tries to focus the video on it, it vanishes. In that distance is a large, spiky black mass that can't be clearly seen.

Then the horde draws Sans's, and thus the video's, attention. Dozens of humanoid figures are rushing toward the wall. As they get closer and clearer, their appearances seem to be constantly shifting--humanoid, animal, entirely formless, full of static and cracks. In some of them, an eye forms in the darkness.

They seem to be actively avoiding making contact with the wall, but with the way they reach and claw upward, it's clear they are singlemindedly intent on murdering Sans.

There's a flash of something else shifting--brown hair, chin-length. The video cuts off immediately.]
